To Costa Rica we go!

Emily in Santa Maria de Dota, probably thinking about coffee

As I ready this page to be launched (!), I am at the same time packing for my next trip down to my research site on Wednesday. I'm pretty darn excited and have so much to do in the few days that I'm in Santa María! I will be scoping out the prototype of my rain-out shelters, preparing the land for planting in July, and mapping out the final layout of the research plots. I also get to meet with all the wonderful and exceedingly helpful people that I've gotten to know in the area.

It being the rainy season, I'm packing my bags with everything that I'll need to work in a muddy field: I've got my rain boots, waterproof jacket, waterproof field notebooks, and waterproof bags for everything else! What's agroecology if you can't get a little dirty?

I look forward to posting more lab notes in the coming weeks after I return. I'll be sharing some information with you about my host farm, the coffee producing community of Santa Maria de Dota, and of course the impacts of climate change on coffee production. Stay tuned, and thanks so much for your time and interest.

Cheers,

Emily

About This Project

Over 80% of adults in the US drink coffee, and it also plays a key role in the livelihoods of farmers all over the world. Unfortunately, it's predicted that climate change could devastate the coffee industry through changes in rainfall and temperature. One of the main issues will be drought, so we need to know which coffee varietals will respond best in the field. Such information will inform climate-smart planting decisions for vulnerable producers under new growing conditions.

Blast off!
