Results
Hi all,
We have some really interesting results that I'd like to share!
As a reminder, Dr. Telzer and I were using this sample to answer a different question. We wanted to know how parent cohesion (i.e., quality of the relationship between the participant and his/her parents) was related to depression when teens go away to college.
We took a measure of depression (CESD) and parent cohesion (IPPA Parent) at Time 1 from participants, before students arrived on campus. Two months later, we collected those same measures again. When I say here "took a measure of..." I mean that I have a questionnaire that has been shown to reliably measure what it's supposed to and I gave it to my participants to complete.
Afterwards, we created an average score of depression and parent cohesion for each time point and subtracted time 1 from time 2.
Our analyses show us that changes in parent cohesion predict changes in depression for girls but not boys. In other words, increases in quality of family relationships serve as a protective factor against depression during the college transition for freshman girls. The two were inversely related, meaning as parent cohesion increased, depression decreased and vice versa.
Thanks again for all your help in making this project happen. We're still not finished with analyses: we'll start work on another set of research questions early next semester. For now, I've begun writing up the results for a scientific article, which I will link here when it is published.
Please don't hesitate to email me if you have questions: jmoreir2@illinios.edu.

Joao
